In the story of Yeshua's long distance healing of the Centurian's servant, there is a verse which has served for hundreds of years as the basis for what is commonly known as replacement theology.
Matthew 8:11 And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 8:12 But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
According to replacement theology, the Jews broke the covenant God made with Abraham when they rejected His Son and surrendered Him to the Romans for crucifixion. God then transfered that covenant to the Christians, who were now His chosen people. Has has been the basis of the persecution of Jews for over
two thousand years.
Christians felt empowered to take out God's displeasure on the Jews by subjecting them to violence and discrimination. It was one of the motivating factors behind the Crusades and the Inquisition. It was also one of the reasons the Pope did not feel inclined to condemn the Holocaust. Those evil Christ killers deserved it.
This is what happens when people decide they are God's "chosen" people. The first thing they want to do is get rid of everybody who has not been "chosen". We see this today in the murder and mayhem being carried out by Muslim fanatics. They are making the same mistake Christians made when they acquired political
and military power.
We are all chosen by our Father to receive the gift of life. Nobody gets more life than anybody else. The question is whether we use that life to glorify God and help His children or use it to further our own selfish and misguided purposes.
Let us hope we make the right choice.
